2008 was an interesting year for real estate on the peninsula. The press was feeding us stories of doom and gloom right from the beginning, but reality did not always match the media reports. Some areas of the peninsula, especially East Palo Alto and parts of Redwood City, San Mateo, and Sunnyvale, were seriously impacted by the sub prime mortgage fiasco. Other parts held their own and, in fact, prices continued to climb well into the year. All of that changed when the stock market plummeted, and the reality as 2008 ended and 2009 began was that all areas had been impacted, but some more than other. In this section I have compiled sales data for the following cities: Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos, Menlo Park, and Atherton (click the buttons on the left side of this page to access 2008 sales data for the year as a whole, for the 4th quarter only, and for December only, with % change from the same period in 2007, for selected cities in the mid peninsula.)
